Best of the Best 2012: Spas: Elemis Spa at the St. Regis Bangkok
High above the chaos that is Bangkok’s central business district, the Elemis Spa at the St. Regis Bangkok (+188.8.131.5277, www.stregis.com) seems to float, heavenlike, in midair. Visitors enter the hotel’s white-marble oasis on floor 15 of a new 47-story tower that opened in April 2011. Accompanying 16 mostly white- and cream-hued treatment rooms, a color-therapy chamber invites guests to zone out under lights that slowly change from blue to pink to yellow and so on. The colors are intended to activate biochemical and hormonal processes that either sedate or stimulate, depending on the person. Other pre- and post-treatment facilities include separate men’s and women’s relaxation areas (each with hanging person-size baskets filled with pillows), showers with multiple heads, hot and cold pools, and a wading pool where spa-goers walk over pebbles to perform self-reflexology treatments. The menu’s Elemis-brand treatments aim to yield results and promote relaxation. Schedule time in a Rassoul chamber, for example, where therapists perform the ancient Arabian bathing ritual with mineral-rich clay, heat, and steam to increase circulation and soften the skin.
