Grand Openings: Czech Inn

King Wenceslas II of Bohemia founded Prague’s St. Thomas Monastery in 1285, and the structure, which was rebuilt in the 1700s after numerous fires, still serves as the home of an order of Augustinian monks. Today, however, the holy men share their sanctum with followers of London hotelier Sir Rocco Forte, who in May opened the newest Rocco Forte Collection property on the monastery grounds.

Named after the monks who still stroll the cloistered hallways, the 101-room Augustine hotel is located on the west bank of the Vltava River in the Malá Strana quarter, near Prague Castle. The Rocco Forte Collection created the hotel from seven buildings, including the monastery and a former brewery. The company restored the monastery’s terraces, stone arches, and wooden ceilings, while incorporating features—such as stalactites and an ancient pool now covered by glass in the Brewery Bar—found during the property’s excavation. Upstairs from the bar, a glassed-in courtyard makes a divine setting for the hotel’s Monastery restaurant. The Augustine, +42.0.266.11.22.33, www.theaugustine.com ($448–$5,630)
