Grand Openings: Natural Progression

Subtlety is not typically a trademark of Kelly Wearstler’s designs. But for her latest endeavor, the Viceroy Anguilla, the Los Angeles–based designer drew inspiration from the laid-back Caribbean island. "I didn’t want it to be a giant elephant on the island," says Wearstler of the 35-acre resort and residential project, which opens in July. "It’s the first time I’ve done a project without any bold colors. We used shades of yellow, gold, pink, and brown—all shades you’d find on different parts of the island. It’s simple but stylish."

The Viceroy’s 166 accommodations range from 486-square-foot residences to 6,100-square-foot villas and feature Wearstler-designed furnishings and outdoor showers swathed in limestone. Slightly more dramatic in appearance, the public areas include a lobby adorned with six kinds of marble.

The Anguilla property represents a departure not only for Wearstler but also for the Viceroy brand, which aims to evolve from boutique hotels to five-star resorts. In addition to Anguilla, the company opened a property in Miami in March and will debut its first mountain resort, in Snowmass, Colo., in December.
