Private Reserve at Soneva Gili

  • Cynthia Rosenfeld

The Resort: Guests of Soneva Gili quickly adapt to the "no news, no shoes" policy at this private-island retreat in the Maldives. Butlers attend to their barefoot and blissfully unplugged charges by unpacking for them on arrival and offering cold towels, drinks, and other treats throughout their stay. Most of Soneva Gili’s over-water villas are linked by wooden walkways, with a few additional villas standing offshore on their own. All 45 villas provide direct access to the sea, where guests can swim with vibrant puffer fish and the occasional turtle.

The Villa: Set more than 500 yards from the nearest structure, the Private Reserve is a recluse’s haven. The 15,000-square-foot compound comprises five thatch-roofed buildings containing three bedrooms, a kitchen, a gym, a steam room, and a sauna. At the massage pavilion, therapists from Soneva Gili’s Six Senses spa offer Reiki, acupuncture, and Ayurveda treatments. The resort’s main spa, restaurants, and other facilities can be accessed via the two boats that are at your disposal at the Private Reserve.

The Highlight: Reliving childhood with a race up to the rooftop deck and a whoosh down the villa’s waterslide into the lagoon below.

The Price: From $8,500 per night for up to six guests. +960.664. 0304, www.sixsenses.com
