Sneak Peek: Balcones del Atlántico, Dominican Republic

  • Christina Garofalo

On May 1, RockResorts’ opened Balcones del Atlántico in the ecologically rich village of Las Terrenas, located on the Dominican Republic’s Samaná Peninsula. The resort features 86 two- and three-bedroom suites that, starting around $400 per night, include a kitchen, living room, dining room, and terrace; many have private pools. Balcones’ beachfront restaurant offers a menu of locally inspired foods served tapas-style, or in-room meals prepared by special order. The area’s many attractions include boat rides to Cayo Levantado, a six-square-mile raised coral key island located a few miles offshore that sits amid one of the largest breeding grounds for humpback whales, which migrate to the area from January 15 through March 25 each year. At nearby Los Haitises National Park, tourists can embark on tours through subtropical rainforests and caverns adorned with Native American cave paintings. (866.513.7625, balcones.rockresorts.com)
