Lapostolle Residence, Colchagua Valley, Chile

When Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle came to Chile’s Colchagua Valley two decades ago, the area was a viticultural backwater. But the Grand Marnier heiress, who cofounded the valley’s Lapostolle winery in 1994, was convinced she could coax first growth–quality vintages from the granitic soil. Her premier blend, Clos Apalta, attests her prescience, most convincingly with its selection as Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2008. That same year, Lapostolle launched another Colchagua Valley first: a luxury resort. Like Clos Apalta, Lapostolle Residence remains the foremost option in the valley, which is now a hotbed of fine winemaking. Four spacious and private casitas—Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Petit Verdot, and Merlot—are strung along a hillside overlooking Apalta’s vineyards and winery. Taking a cue from California’s Napa Valley, the style is casual and modern, with deep soaking tubs, fireplaces, and decks. The intimate retreat serves exceptional wine-paired meals and offers free winery tours, though guests need not stray from their rooms for a taste of Colchagua Valley’s finest: Each casita’s refrigerator comes stocked with Lapostolle wines. ($500–$600 per person, all-inclusive) www.lapostolle.com
