A 15-minute drive up Collins Avenue from the lively scene in South Beach, Bal Harbour blossomed in the 1960s with the debut of the now-famous Bal Harbour Shops. The Shops complex remains the heart of this upscale, low-key community, which in January welcomed a suitably exclusive new neighbor.

 

Set just across the street from the Shops, on the site of the former Sheraton Bal Harbour, the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort comprises three newly built skyscrapers with interiors by Yabu Pushelberg. The design firm glamorized the hotel’s public spaces with mirrors and crystal, and gave the 243 rooms (priced from $850) cool tones and spa-like marble bathrooms. In contrast to South Beach’s trendy urban hotels, the St. Regis emphasizes privacy and space. Each room has a terrace overlooking the ocean and grounds, which span nine acres along a quiet stretch of beach.

 

Indulgences are plentiful in the Bal Har­bour area, and the St. Regis has several of its own, including a Remède spa and J&G Grill. For guests in search of some truly upscale shopping, the Residences at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is offering 245 condos, priced from $1.9 million to more than $10 million.
