Ultimate Private Islands: Fiji: Laucala Island

  • Jennifer Ryan

At nearly 3,000 acres, Laucala Island is by far the largest private island featured in these pages. The Fijian hideaway thus has ample space for an 18-hole golf course (designed by David McLay Kidd), a runway that can accommodate midsize business jets, and an equestrian center, as well as a farm that supports the resort’s nearly self-sustaining agricultural program. The property’s 25 villas—each of which includes a backyard, full-size swimming pool, yoga pavilion, living room, separate sitting room, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and butler service—are scattered throughout the rugged island, which is accessible via a 45-minute charter flight from Fiji’s international airport.

With a staff some 300 strong serving a maximum of just 80 guests on so many acres, you will never have to wait in line at Laucala. Tee times, spa appointments, and water sports can all be arranged on a whim. Guests can also dine any time of day at one of five full-service restaurants and bars, each stocked with a full supply of Red Bull: After acquiring Laucala and refurbishing the island for three years, the founder of the energy-drink company opened the resort to guests in 2008.
