Although it looks like a bold piece of design for the traditional German company, A. Lange & Söhne’s just-announced Grande Lange 1 Lumen is actually another step in its long obsession with function. The new model (price not yet announced), fitted with smoked-sapphire glass and swathes of glow-in-the-dark Superluminova, is optimized to be read in the dark. The large date display especially is designed for nighttime viewing: While the tens display is conventionally coated with the glow-in-the-dark substance, the more rapidly changing ones place is a transparent disc passing over a luminescent background that will keep its charge from ambient light.
