FrontRunners: Race Clocks

With each America’s Cup have come a number of sailing-themed timepieces; watchmakers like to associate their efforts with that competition because both feed on leading-edge technologies. To commemorate this summer’s Cup, Audemars Piguet (www.audemarspiguet.com) has built the limited-edition, $23,100 Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph. It is made from forged carbon, a material with excellent shock resistance that is light enough to reduce the watch’s weight to a shade over 3.5 ounces. Girard-Perregaux (www .girard-perregaux.com) has introduced the $13,300 Laureato USA 98 chronograph, which is made from titanium coated with diamondlike carbon, a material used to build racecar engines. And Hublot (www.hublot.com) has combined carbon and titanium in its $11,500 Big Bang Luna Rossa, which is limited to 1,000 pieces.
