A collection of more than 500 bottles of newly released Krug Champagnes—which spans nearly 40 years’ worth of important vintages that have been stored in Krug’s Reims cellars since production—will be for sale at a December 1 auction at Sotheby’s New York.

The largest selection ever offered from the house of Krug, it will include a case of the 1990 Krug Clos du Mesnil (estimated to fetch $18,000 to $25,000). “They only made a little more than 1,300 cases of this wine in bottles, and that was over 20 years ago. It is exceedingly rare to see a full case of this available, much less direct from Krug in pristine condition,” says the head of Sotheby’s New York wine department, Duncan Sterling.

The sale also will highlight legendary vintages, including one bottle from Krug’s 1961 vintage (estimated at $2,000 to $3,000), three from the 1979 vintage (estimated at $5,000 to $7,000), and six from the 1982 vintage (estimated at $6,000 to $9,000); and examples of the Krug Grande Cuvée, which have been obtainable only through private tastings at Krug’s cellar, will be available in quantities from 750 ml bottles up to 3-liter jeroboams. Additionally, a pair of bottles of the Krug Fraîcheur (estimated at $700 to $1,000 for a lot of two bottles)—of which there are just 14 bottles remaining in Reims—and six magnum vertical vintages of Krug Clos du Mesnil from 1990 through 2000 (estimated at $14,000 to $18,000) will be available.
