Christie’s Presents an Exhibition Where Sculpture Meets Painting

  • Richard Serra’s One Ton Prop (House of Cards)—
  • Boy Building a House of Cards by French artist Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin
  • Jeff Koons
  • Tony Smith

It might surprise some art aficionados to learn that the famous painting Boy Building a House of Cards by French artist Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin is part of a series of four works on the same subject. The four works are being reunited for the first time at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, England, at the home of Lord Rothschild in honor of a Christie’s sculptural exhibition inspired by the paintings, from May 26 to October 28 at Waddesdon.

The exhibition comprises 33 sculptures by contemporary artists Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor, and more, priced from $100,000 to $12 million. Pieces include Richard Serra’s One Ton Prop (House of Cards)—four square steel plates balancing on an equilibrium—and Donald Judd’s Untitled (79–40 Bernstein), a set of 10 rectangular-shaped iron rods backed by red Plexiglas that mimics rows of stacked playing cards. Among the exhibition’s specially commissioned pieces is Joana Vasconcelos’ Pavillon de Thé, a nearly 16-foot-tall teapot with filigree motifs inspired by Chardin’s Lady Taking Tea, one of the companion paintings to House of Cards, which is on view with the other paintings from the series inside the Rothschild home.
