Digital Matisse Sale

Christie’s auction house is exploring new territory with its first art online -only auction, a 15-day sale that started November 19. The event features 96 stunning black-and-white prints by French artist Henri Matisse, and it is accessible at www.christies.com/matisse through December 4.

The 250-year-old auction house has previously experimented with the online-only platform for the sales of Elizabeth Taylor’s limited-edition Hérmés purses and 50th-anniversary James Bond memorabilia in the last few months. Based on the popularity and success of these sales, Christie’s hopes the online-only platform will draw awareness and bring accessibility to fine art, and to Matisse’s less-mainstream pieces in particular. The sale features drypoints, etchings, aquatints, and large-scale lithographs that span Matisse’s 50-year career, each of which are sourced directly from the artist’s family. Works start at $1,000, but the sale is estimated to fetch more than $800,000. Highlights include the circa-1925 lithograph on stone, Odalisque à la Coupe de Fruits, which may sell for as much as $50,000. (www.christies.com)
