FrontRunners: Art Sale

<< Back to Robb Report, July 2004

For the first time since 1921, a Vermeer painting is going to auction. Sotheby’s (www.sothebys.com) will sell Young Woman Seated at the Virginals July 8 in London. Sotheby’s issued a modest presale estimate of $5.3 million. “We opted for the relatively conservative figure to focus people’s attention on the painting, rather than on the price,” says Alex Bell, Sotheby’s European head of Old Master paintings.
