Addled by absinthe and hashish, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) destroyed many of his early portraits and sculptures, calling them childish baubles. However, he held his later work in high regard—as does Italian penmaker Montegrappa, which has dedicated the latest edition of its Genio Creativo series to Modigliani. The Montegrappa Tributo ad Amedeo Modigliani (www.montegrappa.com) features a swirling blue pattern that is meant to recall the artist’s strong brushstrokes and his penchant for framing female subjects with cerulean backgrounds. A shapely barrel and cap reflect the oval forms of the women’s faces, and a slender clip imitates their aquiline noses. In December, Montegrappa released ballpoint, fountain, and roller-ball models of the pen that range in price from $585 to $5,780. The most expensive model is the pink-gold version (shown), which has a diamond crowning its cap and is being produced in a limited edition of 150.
