FrontRunners: Fancy This

<< Back to Robb Report, February 2004

Fancy colored diamonds are gaining prominence as awareness of their extreme rarity and value spreads. The inaugural Palm Beach Jewelry and Antique Show (www.palmbeachshow.com), from February 13 through 17, will display the Rainbow Diamond Collection, comprising 300 fancy colored diamonds weighing more than 350 carats total.

The collection was assembled over the past 34 years by Antwerp diamond expert Eddy Elzas, professor of gemology at Paris’ Institut Nationale de Gemmologie. It includes three of the world’s 11 known red diamonds, the rarest of all, which are worth more than one million times their weight in gold when compared gram for gram.

Throughout the show—which features 200 international dealers in antique furniture, silver, bronze, porcelain, objets d’art, and jewelry—Elzas will conduct lectures about fancy colored diamonds, addressing which colors are most in demand and how to tell a simply good stone from a great one.
