FrontRunners: Out of the Woods
Designer John Hardy lives and works in a luxurious retreat in Bali, where he frequently draws upon the island’s vast natural resources for his creations. His latest collection of men’s accessories and desktop gadgets is handcrafted in dark, finely textured palm wood from the sugar palm tree that is found throughout Indonesia. “Once the tree reaches a certain age, it falls naturally,” explains the ecologically minded designer, who relishes the idea of recycling the trees.
The cleverly crafted palm wood accessories are designed with concealed magnetic elements, giving them added functionality and even a degree of playfulness. A sleek grooming set, for instance, features a razor and brush that adhere to a magnetic pedestal, minimizing bathroom clutter. Hardy’s palm wood desk clock is constructed as a puzzle with several magnetic pieces that can be reconfigured to create a variety of shapes. “Men are natural builders, so they will love this clock,” says Hardy (800.2JHARDY). “They can satisfy their building instincts while they sit at their desks.”
