FrontRunners: Picturing History

Some of the most unforgettable images ever captured on film are on display and on sale at the Pop International Galleries (212.533.4262, www.popinternational.com) in New York’s SoHo district. Images in Our Time: A Collection of Memorable Photographs was culled from the Associated Press archives and spans more than 130 years of history, from the driving of the Golden Spike that created the ranscontinental Railroad in 1869 to the attack on the World Trade Center last fall. Images of Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio about to kiss, Elvis receiving his first army haircut, and the Beatles performing on The Ed Sullivan Show are included with photos of the Marines raising the American flag at Iwo Jima, the Hindenberg on fire, and Titanic leaving the dock on its maiden voyage.

All of the photographs in the show, which runs through September, are available as high-quality prints in limited editions of no more than 250. Prices for the prints range from $500 unframed to more than $4,000 framed. Jeff Jaffe, owner of the gallery, had the Herculean task of choosing the exhibit photographs from among the 50 million in the AP vaults. “It was an odyssey and an absolute joy at best, and a hair-raising experience at worst,” he says. With the help of friends, family, and coworkers, he compiled a 10-page list of the most memorable moments and events of the past 130 years, then searched the AP archives for photographs that best illustrated them. A year later, Jaffe had narrowed his choices to the 100 images that compose the exhibit.
