FrontRunners: Tasteful Display

<< Back to Robb Report, September 2003

Andy Warhol may have had a taste for Campbell’s soup, but his legacy lends itself to a heightened culinary experience at De la Tierra restaurant in Delray Beach, Fla. Tucked in a tropical garden at the Sundy House Resort (561.272.5678, www.sundyhouse.com), an 11-room retreat environing Delray Beach’s oldest home, De la Tierra features the original works of executive chef Johnny Vinczencz on the menu—and those of pop-art legend Warhol on the walls. Opened in February, the restaurant’s Warhol Room is a private dining space adorned with paintings from the collection of Sundy House owner Thomas Worrell. Works include portraits of Truman Capote, John Lennon, and Dolly Parton. “You’ve got all these emotions in the room,” says Worrell. “Lennon is the serious and somber one, Dolly Parton is whimsical and energetic, and Truman Capote is what he is.” Diners sit in close proximity to the pop-culture portraits while enjoying Vinczencz’s Caribbean-influenced creations. A blend of local seafood produce from the Sundy House garden, Vinczencz’s cuisine is well suited to its South Florida setting—as is the restaurant’s uncommon decor. “Warhol spoke a lot about the superficiality and the glitz,” says Worrell. “South Florida is a Warhol type of place.”
