January is one of the best months to hit the slopes in Europe, Canada, and the United States, but a keen contingent of skiers will nonetheless head for the salesroom at Christie’s London South Kensington branch to bid in person at the annual Christie’s Ski Sale. Scheduled for January 22, the auction will offer more than 200 iconic ski posters, most of them from the 1920s and ’30s, promoting some of the world’s most popular ski mountains and resorts. “It’s a very busy room,” says Nicolette Tomkinson, head of the sale and its creator. “People like to be part of it.” Of the 223 posters (an additional 24 vintage travel trunks, most of them by Louis Vuitton, are on offer as well), the majority tout glamorous Swiss winter locales such as St. Moritz and Gstaad. Two Carl Moos images are tied for the sale’s highest estimate: 1924’s St. Moritz and a 1928 example dubbed St. Moritzer, Skirennen. Each of those posters is expected to fetch as much as about $34,000. (christies.com)
