Picture Perfect

Sotheby’s fall photograph sale, being held October 14 and 15, will feature many seminal photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries from a variety of artists. Those represented include masters of classical photography, such as Man Ray, Carleton E. Watkins, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lange, as well as contemporary figures such as Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Lee Friedlander, and Irving Penn. With more than 249 lots offered over two days, the sale is estimated to bring in $6 million to $10 million. Among the most intriguing is Tina, Nude on the Azotea, a photo of Tina Modotti taken by Edward Weston on the rooftop terrace of their house near Mexico City in 1924. Having been part of a private collection since the 1970s, it is thought to be the only one in existence (Weston’s more erotic photographs were printed only in small numbers) and is expected to sell for between $250,000 and $350,000. Shown is Irving Penn’s Asaro Mudmen, estimated to sell for between $250,000 and $350,000. (www.sothebys.com, 212.606.7176)
