On January 20, the Carlton Hobbs gallery in New York will launch Inspired by Antiquity: Classical Influences on 18th and 19th Century Furniture and Works of Art. The exhibition marks the largest sale of Thomas Hope furniture since Christie’s auction of Hope’s country estate in 1917. Thomas Hope drew inspiration from antiquity, and, in so doing, became a leading designer of the Regency style. The furniture will be on view through February 14.

The Carlton Hobbs gallery collaborated with leading academics to uncover ancient design references evoked in the 40 magnificent pieces in the exhibition. Among this display is a pair of elegant lights in the shape of winged griffins, circa 1802, which are believed to have belonged to Thomas Hope himself.

Not to be missed is the pair of exquisitely carved ivory candlesticks in canopic jar form, circa 1800, originating from the ivory craft in Murshidabad, India. The candlesticks are a rare prize for collectors, as very little has survived of the Murshidabad ivory ornaments, and at 18 inches tall, they are one of the largest remaining examples.
