The Best of the Best 2003: Personal Aircraft – Lancair Columbia 350

<< Back to Robb Report, Best of the Best

Reaching a destination quickly is not always enough. If you also want to turn some heads while taxiing on the runway, then consider the Lancair Columbia 350. It was designed with both speed and aesthetics in mind. The fixed-gear Lancair, which can cruise at 219 mph, is the fastest normally aspirated single- or twin-engine aircraft on the market, even faster than many turboprops.

The Columbia 350’s composite construction is strong and light, but its design gives the aircraft an aggressive sporting stance, much like

a luxury sport coupe—a very fast coupe. The cabin includes comfortable leather seats, a wraparound dash, and a side-stick control that is similar to the one found in the F-16 jet.

The Lancair, which is priced from $360,000 to $400,000, seats four and has a range of approximately 1,500 miles and a ceiling of 18,000 feet. This means you and three guests can zip from New York to Chicago in just over three hours—and look good doing it.
