Best of the Best 2016: Wheels | Convertibles: Ferrari 488 Spider

The 488 Spider is designed so that even when it’s traveling at 125 mph, the driver and passenger can converse without shouting. But the car can go much faster than that. The wallop of the turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8 enables the 488 Spider to reach a top speed of 203 mph and to blast from zero to 62 mph in less than 3 seconds. And with reasonable suspension settings and pleasant ride characteristics, the car is also well suited to leisurely cruising. The elegant design includes Ferrari’s patented blown spoiler, an integrated rear scoop that produces downforce.

  • The 661 hp V-8 produces 18.5 percent more power than the engine of the 458 Spider, the model that the 488 Spider replaced.

  • The blown spoiler takes in air at the base of the rear glass and sends it out through an opening in the bumper, eliminating the need for a rear wing.

  • The Brembo Extreme Design braking system provides a 9 percent faster response than the brakes of the 458 Spider.
