Following the theme of rugged elegance set by the Range Rover, the new Land Rover LR3 (www.landrover.com) has handsome, squared-off lines and sterling 4×4 credentials that start with permanent four-wheel drive. A 300 hp, 4.4-liter version of Jaguar’s V-8 increases low-end torque and revises breathing so that the SUV can wade across rivers. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The LR3 also introduces Terrain Response, a system that optimizes handling and traction under a variety of conditions ranging from slippery roads to rutted trails. The driver selects from one of five settings, and Terrain Response determines the appropriate ride height, engine torque response, and transmission settings. The cabin can accommodate seven passengers in three rows of seats under a sunroof and two moonroofs, and the rear rows collapse into a completely flat cargo area.
