The Infiniti G37 is already a serious contender in the world of premium performance coupes, but the Japanese automaker is ready to make a name for itself in this extremely competitive market segment—and that name is Infiniti Performance Line, or IPL for short. Unveiled at Pebble Beach during the Concours d’Elegance weekend in August, the new IPL G Coupe is set to go head-to-head with the BMW 335iS, Audi S4, and Lexus IS350 F-Sport.
Infiniti engineers added a new high-flow exhaust system and recalibrated the engine control unit (ECU) to eke out 18 more horsepower and 6 additional foot-pounds of torque from the 3.7-liter V-6 engine found in the standard model. Although 348 horsepower does not sound very impressive on paper, the IPL G Coupe’s upgrades are more focused on the overall driving experience than sheer output. The feeling of acceleration, exhaust sound, and ride quality were all taken into consideration for the new IPL G Coupe, and the suspension was also modified. Essentially, the Infiniti IPL G Coupe offers the dynamic driving experience of the Nissan 370Z without the boy-racer stigma—it even comes with a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission.
The IPL (which will be offered at less than $50,000 when it goes on sale at the end of the year) is not quite ready to run with the performance-category power players—namely the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG, and Lexus IS-F—but Infiniti is certainly taking steps in the right direction.
