We spent a day at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch outside of Las Vegas testing Dunlop’s latest on an arsenal of cutting-edge crotch rockets including the Honda CBR1000RR, Yamaha R1, and Suzuki GSX-R1000. Claiming 15 percent better traction and 25 percent better cornering stability than the outgoing Qualifier model, Dunlop’s dual compound Sportmax Q2s incorporate a bonded ultrafine carbon black and resin for reduced warm-up time, continuous hex beads for improved responsiveness, and other technical features best comprehended by engineering-school grads.
But in the intense Nevada desert heat, far removed from the theoretical gains promised on paper, Dunlop’s Sportmax Q2s shined. At Spring Mountain’s tight bends, turn-in felt sharp, and mid-corner corrections on decreasing radius sweepers came easily. The tires felt stable while pitched at extreme angles, and never once did we doubt their road-holding abilities.
