FrontRunners: California Dreaming

<< Back to Robb Report, September 2006

In the early 1950s, automobile designer Howard “Dutch” Darrin began imagining a new sports car in his studio in Hollywood, Calif. He sold the design, which featured doors that flipped open sideways and slid into the front fenders, to Kaiser-Frazer Corp. in 1952. The automaker went out of business only a few years later, but not before Darrin built about 435 examples of his vehicle, known as the Kaiser-Darrin. A 1954 model will appear at this year’s Niello Concours at Serrano (www.nielloconcoursatserrano.com), a display of some 175 classic cars in the El Dorado Hills of Northern California. The event will begin with a gala on September 29, continue with a driving tour of wineries of the Gold Country on September 30, and conclude with the Concours proper on October 1. . . .
