Land Rover Uncovers the First Convertible SUV of Its Kind

Thanks to Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque Convertible—claimed to be the world’s first luxury compact sports utility vehicle that can go topless—off-road enthusiasts can have the wind in their hair while driving over hairy terrain. The British automaker released video yesterday showing the convertible SUV tackling the muck, mire, and mountainous landscape of the marque’s testing grounds at the Eastnor Castle estate in the United Kingdom.

No stranger to open-air transports, Land Rover relied on its heritage, which includes military mainstays like the Land Rover Series 2 and the Ranger Special Operations Vehicle to create a convertible SUV that does not sacrifice structural rigidity. The convertible Evoque’s modern automotive technology includes Hill Descent Control for greater stability and security and a Terrain Response System that will adjust for traction and handling on conditions ranging from gravel to ice. It will also be equipped with the company’s patented Wade Sensing capabilities to assist in driving through water that is up to 1.5 feet deep.

With power-train and luxury-trim specifications that should be announced later this year, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible will first flash its attributes at the Los Angeles Auto Show (November 20–29). Sales in select markets will begin in the spring of 2016. (landrover.com)
