The Toys of Summer: Smooth Sailing

<< Back to Robb Report, Toys of Summer

It may seem somewhat incongruous for a BMW Group–owned company, DesignworksUSA, to have styled the Bavaria Cruiser 55—a yacht propelled by wind, not horsepower. But BMW has become linked with sailing in recent years through its sponsorship of Larry Ellison’s Oracle Racing syndicate, and this new design project is not unprecedented: DesignworksUSA created the shape of the Z60 performance cruiser that Belgian yacht builder Zeydon launched last fall. (“Performance cruiser” is an industry classification for vessels that are fast and comfortable—two traits also associated with BMW.)

Launched in April, the Cruiser 55 (about $350,000) is the largest boat from German builder Bavaria. The vessel features portholes that run flush with the deck and narrow, horizontal hull windows. Its minimalist interior comes in three-, four-, and five-cabin configurations, and amenities include a retractable bathing platform. When closed, the platform conceals a tender garage that can hold personal watercraft—fast-moving, agile, motor-powered vehicles for which you would expect a BMW firm to make room.
