The Best of the Best 2003: Undiscovered Bests - Extra 300

For several years, the Extra 300 has been the aircraft of choice for aerobatic pilots on the air show circuit. The two-seater rolls, pitches, streaks, and dives, exerting up to 10 g’s on occupants proficient and brave enough to pilot the plane.

The 300 is a descendant of the 260 that German pilot Walter Extra flew to victories in international aerobatic competitions.

Given its bent toward performance, the Extra 300 would be the choice for anyone seeking to spice up a pleasure flight or a commute. (The plane can even come equipped with the same smoke system that accompanies its aerobatic models.) The monoplane rockets off a runway and climbs 3,000 feet per minute, and its 300-hp Lycoming engine gives the Extra a cruising speed of 195 mph and a 500-mile range.

As a commuter, the $240,000 Extra feels stable and docile. The real fun, however, begins when the plane rocks and rolls.

The Extra’s lightweight carbon fiber construction allows you to fling the agile plane about the sky like a Blue Angels fighter jet.

Equip the Extra with an optional video camera, and you can preserve the high-g action for posterity.
