Tetherow

It takes a lot of work to make a golf course look like the designer did not do much of anything to the land, and David McLay Kidd is a master of this craft. He has perfected the art with Tetherow (541.388.2582, www.tetherow.com), a new course in the golfing hot spot of Bend, Ore., which is home to two dozen courses and upscale communities, including Pronghorn and Sunriver.

Tetherow stands out among this crowd due to the subtle hand of Kidd. Not an inch of the 7,450-yard course feels contrived, though Tetherow does confound. On the 424-yard, par-4 sixth hole, which features an elevated tee overlooking a split fairway, Kidd invites second-guessing. Golfers who are struggling with the choice of which route to take might have the chance to ask the designer himself for advice: Kidd was so enamored of the Bend area that he moved to the Tetherow community permanently.
