Aman at Summer Palace

<< Back to Robb Report, 21st Annual Best of the Best

Straying from Amanresorts’ less-is-more aesthetic, the new Aman at Summer Palace (+86.10.5987.9999, www.amanresorts.com) abounds with brightly lacquered imperial furnishings. The Beijing hotel is set within century-old buildings adjacent to a former palace of Empress Dowager Cixi, who reportedly collected before her death in 1908 enough hand-sewn frocks to fill 3,000 camphorwood chests. Amanresorts preserved the integrity of the buildings—once used by guests awaiting an audience with the empress—but updated them with such creature comforts as a cigar lounge and an indoor pool. In the 51 guest rooms and suites, latticework doors slide open to reveal polished Jin clay tiles, ceilings with exposed wooden beams, opium beds, and Ming-style horseshoe chairs. Each room also includes a well-stocked bar that is hidden inside a chest. ($550–$3,800)
