The Best of the Best 2003: Sailboats - Abeking & Rasmussen

For his voyage around the world, the sailor who would come to own Abeking & Rasmussen’s Alithia wanted a yacht that was fast and safe. To assemble his vessel, he hired a dream team: Connecticut naval architect Bill Tripp to design a swift, lightweight boat; English designer Andrew Winch to conceive a basic but elegant interior; the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Germany to build an Alustar aluminum hull; and consultant Jens Cornelsen to oversee the project.

Tripp gave Alithia a hull durable enough to withstand circumnavigation, and a carbon fiber mast and boom that would minimize weight. Winch sculpted an 18-berth interior with honeycomb cores and maple veneers, which includes a sophisticated computer system and videoconference capabilities and a study for family members to use. Alithia was delivered last summer, just in time for the world tour.
