A 10-passenger sailboat built recently by Perini Navi was in danger of never making it into the water. Squall, Perini Navi’s first custom sailboat, is a 172-foot aluminum ketch designed by Dubois Naval Architects and completed last July at the Italian boatbuilder’s Viareggio yard. With carbon fiber masts and a one-level superstructure, the lightweight vessel was built primarily for performance. However, because its draft is greater than 16 feet, its hull would have scraped the bottom of the channel near Perini Navi’s Viareggio boatyard. Pe-rini Navi solved this dilemma by attaching 26 heavy-duty balloons to Squall, lifting the boat just high enough.
