Using a baseball analogy to describe Benetti’s launching of the 183-foot Galaxy, the initial build from its new shipyard for custom yachts in Livorno, Italy, you could say the company hit the ball out of the park in its first at bat. The effort could have gone foul, however. Another client had commissioned the vessel before suffering a reversal of fortune early in the project, but this situation provided an opportunity for an Australian customer who was anxious to have a yacht sooner than new construction generally allows. Working from the recently completed hull, Benetti and the owner’s designer made vast alterations to the original plans, adding a glass elevator, a second dining room, and a gymnasium on the new top deck. The redesign also improved the views aboard Galaxy, particularly from the split-level master suite, which has a raised forward observation lounge, and the bridge-deck dining salon, where a semicircle of sliding glass opens the space to the elements.
