Crown Princess

  • Michael Verdon

Tiara Yachts has a tradition of using the name Crown Jewel for the first hull it launches in a new series. While the builder is highly respected for its sturdy, meticulously built boats, its earlier designs tended to be a bit like a dowager princess. Tiara avoided stylish curves that might enhance the overall form of the boat and stuck with the traditional old-fashioned hull lines. Any hint of deck bling, like offbeat colors or trendy window shapes, was strictly verboten in Tiara’s facility in Holland, Michigan.

But its new 4800 Convertible shows that the company has let its designers loosen their ties. While the 4800 maintains straight and unmistakably American lines—after all, the convertible is the perennial American boat design—Tiara has added pleasant curves to the exterior lines and superstructure and a cat’s-eye-shaped salon window.

Like every Tiara, form follows function throughout the boat. A convertible is designed for both fishing and cruising, and the 4800 will do both well. Anglers will like the extensive and well-equipped cockpit, with advanced fishing accoutrements and aft-facing mezzanine seating—a plus on a boat this size. The teak-clad interior is spacious and light, with three staterooms and two heads. It’s a 48-footer that could venture a few hundred miles offshore to the fishing canyons, or cross to the Bahamas and serve as a very comfortable weekend cruiser. Tiara included a full suite of amenities and options, including a joystick maneuvering system.
