The Foster and Partners–Designed Alen 68 Makes a Splash

  • John Lyon

The Turkish shipyard Alen Yacht has collaborated with the London architecture firm Foster and Partners to create the bold new Alen 68 overnight cruiser. Founded by Norman Foster in 1967, Foster and Partners is no stranger to yacht design, having previously created the sailing yacht Panthalassa for Perini Navi and the distinctive Ocean Emerald and Ocean Sapphire. For the Alen 68, the firm focused on efficiency of design, maximizing above-deck social space to accommodate as many as 16 passengers. The boat’s aft deck features a large sun pad composed of three modular loungers, while the bow is fitted with two black-fabric recliners. Mid-deck, the boat is equipped with an intimate dining area that can be covered by a removable cloth shade in case of inclement weather.

Below deck, the Alen 68 is wrapped in a soft palette of bleached oak and white leather. Strips of LED lighting run along the interior’s white-leather walls, providing illumination and lending the areas a spaceship-like quality. The midship owner’s cabin features a double-size bed, a chaise longue, and an en suite bathroom. The rest of the below-deck space can be configured either to house a large lounge with a wraparound sofa at the bow or to accommodate two additional cabins. A surprisingly spacious tender garage located aft of the owner’s cabin is capable of storing a large tender, personal watercraft, and paddleboards.

Powered by two 1,550 hp engines, the Alen 68 is able to reach an impressive top speed of 44 knots. When cruising at a more modest 36 knots, the boat is able to travel up to 350 miles—perfect for day trips or brief overnight stays. (www.alenyacht.com)
