Morris Yachts Unveils Its Newest Modern Classic

There are plenty of boatbuilders in the northeastern United States continuing to build classic sailing yachts. Where Morris Yachts of Trenton, Maine, succeeds is in its ability to design classic yachts with contemporary appeal. In March, the 41-year-old family-owned shipyard debuted the latest design in its M-Series line of modern-classic sailing vessels. The M46 has an overall length of 46 feet and features two below-deck cabins. The yacht’s design, penned by the American naval architecture firm Sparkman and Stephens in close conjunction with the team at Morris Yachts, is an unmistakable homage to sailing-yacht designs of the 1920s and ’30s.

Compared to the other M-Series models, the M46 offers an extended waterline, a slender hull, a lower displacement to length, and a more vertical bow, all of which improves the yacht’s performance under sail. It features a drop-down swim platform at the stern, which is not a common amenity for classic sailing yachts of this size. Modern technologies aboard the M46 include push-button sailing, allowing the captain to control all sailing functions from the helm, and an integrated wireless entertainment system that enables those aboard to play music and video from their smartphones and tablets on the vessel’s media systems. Pricing for the M46 starts at about $1.1 million. Morris Yachts expects to deliver the first example next spring. (207.244.5509, www.morrisyachts.com)
