A fashion devotee, Ernesto Piano appreciates being able to tie various knots — from the conventional four-in-hand and half-Windsor to a full Windsor and the Italian Vismara double knot — in order to coordinate his neckwear with the shape of his shirt collar and the width of his suit lapels. However, the lawyer from Salerno, Italy, just outside of Naples, was frustrated that the standard 56- to 58-inch long necktie couldn’t accommodate more complex knot configurations without coming up short.  Hoping to solve the problem without resulting to custom, Piano patented and trademarked his own adjustable neckwear design known as the Regulable Tie.  Made in collaboration with artisan neckwear maker Confezioni Marzullo, the tie has a hook-and-clasp mechanism that hides under the collar and allows the wearer to shorten or lengthen the silk fabric, from 60 to 71 inches, depending on his height and the desired knot shape. The handmade ties come in a variety of colors, patterns, and widths, and sell for $250 to $400 depending on the fold, either traditional or 7-fold. To ensure it becomes every man’s lucky tie, Piano has attached an Italian lucky charm — a red coral and gold horn — inside each tie. “As the famous Neapolitan philosopher Benedetto Croce once said,” recalled Piano, “‘I don’t believe in superstitions, but I take them into account.’ ” (+352 621710021, www.regulabletie.com)
