Best Of The Best 2006: Rodeo Star

While fantasizing about the future over lunch one afternoon, Domenico Vacca envisioned himself standing on the stage of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood accepting an Oscar for best wardrobe design. Geographically at least, the New York clothier and store owner moved closer to that dream last year when he opened his shop in Beverly Hills.

“The idea was to bring colorful, sartorial clothing to Hollywood,” says Vacca, whose sixth and largest store stocks more than 2,000 fabrics for custom shirts and another 1,000 for bespoke suits. The two-story, nearly 3,000-square-foot space, which is located within the only freestanding building on Rodeo Drive, includes a tailor shop and, on the second floor, a VIP area.

Italian architect Francesco Arbore paneled the walls and custom cabinetry in bleached wood to impart contemporary Italian flair, while low-hanging Fontana Arte light fixtures illuminate modern tailor’s tables to capture the essence of a Neapolitan tailor shop. “Whether it’s ready-to-wear or custom, everything we sell is handmade in Italy,” says Vacca. “What better way to illustrate that than by re-creating a tailor’s shop?” His collection of circa 1860 Gulf of Naples seaside prints and 120-year-old olive oil vases from his own home in southern Italy serve as personal finishing touches.
