Elements of Style: October 2013

As autumn arrives, designers’ imaginations seem to be heading to the slopes—and to the fashionable chalets of Gstaad, Switzerland, or Courchevel, France. Their most versatile pieces not only fend off the cold but also wrap the wearer in chic layers worthy of a winter holiday among the jet set. Gucci’s cable-knit turtleneck ($925), a featherweight mohair-and-silk blend, retains warmth without adding bulk. Should a chill persist, the downy white fox-fur throw by Dennis Basso ($9,500) offers a perfectly portable cover on a frosty morning. The piercing cold is a fine excuse to don Zilli’s cashmere-and-mink chapka hat ($2,500), Alfred Dunhill’s leather-and-silk gloves ($335), and Brunello Cucinelli’s cashmere scarf ($635). Foundwell’s leather-and-silver-plate flask ($1,695, available at Bergdorf Goodman) will easily hold a warming half liter of Scotch whisky or Cognac. Trekking boots have been snow climbers’ footwear of choice for decades, and Louis Vuitton’s edgy update ($1,150) retains that rugged appeal. Featuring stacked wood bases and lug soles, the leather boots are swathed in faux pony hair and accented with the brand’s signature Damier pattern. Louis Vuitton, 866.884.8866, www.louisvuitton.com
