FrontRunners: The Bomber Takes Flight
First worn by air-force pilots in the 1920s, the bomber jacket has been transformed for the spring collections by designers using myriad plush materials, urbane colors, and trimmer, modern lines. One of the freshest interpretations is the Zilli lambskin bomber (www.zilli.fr) with cashmere-and-silk sleeves. The jacket (left, $12,000) is trimmed with striped knit cuffs for a sporty look. The classic blouson-style jacket has become a favorite of menswear designers, who showed their versions at the spring runway shows in New York City, Paris, and Milan. They paired their jackets with jeans for a casual look and with trousers and dress shirts for a more elegant appearance. Such versatility makes the bomber an ideal item to have with you when flying or traveling by any other means.
