FrontRunners: Knit Picking

Two years ago, Italian dress shirt maker Luigi Borrelli touched off a sartorial feud with suit maker Kiton by hiring the latter’s best tailor, Errico Formicola, and enlisting him to develop the first collection of Borrelli bespoke suits. Now, Borrelli is taking on established Italian knitters such as Avon Celli, Brunello Cucinelli, and Cruciani by putting its label on a line of fine cashmere sweaters.

The debut knit collection encompasses 25 styles—from classic crews and V-necks to variations on the cardigan—with prices ranging from $325 for a crewneck vest to $835 for a two-ply cardigan. The vibrant shades of Mediterranean blue, lemon yellow, orange sorbet, and tomato are typical of Naples, notes Fabio Borrelli, who runs the Naples company that was started by his grandfather at the turn of the last century.

The collection is available in the United States exclusively through
the company’s signature boutiques in New York (212.759.4553; www. luigiborrelli.com) and Palm Beach (561.833.3373).
