FrontRunners: Robe Warrior

<< Back to Robb Report, January 2005

As the son of a British bishop, Daniel Hanson (+44.11.597.83677) grew up appreciating formal clothing, but the designer also developed a respect for dressing down when, in his mid-20s, he came across a remarkable bathrobe in a thrift shop. The find prompted Hanson to begin collecting loungewear, a hobby that evolved into a business nearly two decades ago.

To fashion a vintage look for his first collection—a line of dressing gowns—Hanson culled creative direction from a 19th-century pattern library in Lyon, France, and had the gowns woven on antique jacquard looms in Nottingham, England. He since has expanded into pajamas, waistcoats, and smoking jackets, all made from fine cotton, silk, lamb’s wool, and cashmere. The Daniel Hanson collection—available at Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York, and Takashimaya—includes robes that range from $250 for one made of Egyptian cotton toweling to $6,000 for a version constructed of silk-trimmed pashmina.
