FrontRunners: Shark Bite

<< Back to Robb Report, October 2004

A. Testoni (212.223.0909, www.testoniusa.com) has taken its search for unusual raw materials to new depths. The Italian shoemaker recently netted a supply of skins from the Prionace glauca, otherwise known as the blue shark—one of the most prolific shark species in the sea. The highly textured and durable material is being used to add a cool new fashion twist to a classic pair of men’s oxfords. Limited to 52 pairs in black only, the handmade $875 shoes are sold exclusively at A. Testoni stores in New York and Honolulu. According to the company’s U.S. managing director, one shark provides enough material to make four pairs of the oxfords.
