FrontRunners: Smell of Success

<< Back to Robb Report, December 2004

The Art of Shaving (800.493.2212, www.theartofshaving.com) has spent eight years introducing men to the pleasures of old-fashioned barbershop shaves at its “barber spas” in New York, Miami, and Las Vegas. Building on the success of its spas—and its line of shaving products—the company recently launched its first fragrance: Sandalwood Eau de Toilette.

Sandalwood is made from 100 percent essential oils, with no synthetics, alcohol, or dyes. Based on an oil derived from sandalwood trees in India, the fragrance also includes base notes of myrrh, vanilla, and patchouli, which, when combined with notes of jasmine, fir needle, and eucalyptus, create a spicy, lightly herbal scent with woody undertones.

The fragrance is the first step in the Art of Shaving’s expansion plans, which include the opening of satellite stores across the country. Next spring, the company will debut a line of aromatherapy body-care products based on novel ingredients such as tangerine and vetiver oils, volcanic clay, and soy granules.
