FrontRunners: Sports In His Jeans

While working as a designer at Pro Moves (the now-defunct sports apparel brand owned by Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver Tim Brown), Calvin Stewart met a number of NFL players whose physiques required custom-made suits. He discovered that no such option existed in denim, so last year he launched A.P.O. Jeans (212.244.2796, www.apojeans.net), a company that produces one-of-a-kind dungarees.

Although an acronym for Authorized Pros Only, A.P.O. is not intended strictly for professional athletes. “I didn’t want to just make large-size jeans for football players,” says Stewart. “I wanted to take it up a notch for the high-end consumer—regardless of size—who just wants to wear something special.” The jeans are constructed from Japanese denim and feature nickel-plated zippers and pockets lined with satin made from silk. Optional embellishments include personalized leather back patches and 14-karat gold, silver, platinum, or even diamond-encrusted buttons. The jeans, which start at $1,000 a pair, require approximately three weeks to construct.
