Swimwear That Goes Beyond the Beach

Christina Garofalo

Whether you plan to hit the beaches of Saint-Tropez or rest poolside in Los Angeles, the swimsuit asserts your summer style both in and out of the water. This season, men’s swimwear brands are bringing the fit of tailored trousers to playful swim trunks that—when topped with a cotton shirt and a linen blazer—can transition into your postswim plans. Here are some of our favorite styles. —Christina Garofalo

Vilebrequin is taking its classic sporty swim trunks and dressing them up—with 24-karat gold. The tortoise-patterned shorts are available by special order and feature embroidery in 24-karat-gold thread and 22-karat solid-gold aglets. (Price upon request, www.vilebrequin.com)

Taking a more ecologically conscious approach to luxury is Faherty Brand, which was launched by twin brothers Alex and Mike Faherty (the latter formerly a designer for Ralph Lauren). The brothers create tailored swimsuits, like this turquoise paisley pair, from recycled polyester, which they blend with cotton for added softness. ($125, www.fahertybrand.com)

Though its name implies otherwise, Solid & Striped’s navy-and-white check shorts are among its signature styles. The new swimwear brand makes fade-resistant swimwear, which is tested in chlorine, salt, and sun to ensure that its color holds. ($150, www.solidandstriped.com)

One of the earlier brands to reimagine men’s swimwear is Orlebar Brown, whose sleek, trouser-like lines, fitted with side tabs, come in enough bold colors and playful prints to accommodate almost any wearer. This graphic Key Largo print is one of our favorites. ($310, orlebarbrown.com)

Onia’s swim trunks feature a snap front, zip fly, and adjustable drawstring concealed inside the waist, to maintain the flexibility of a bathing suit with the look of a dress short. The brand offers each of its styles, like this teal pair made exclusively for Raleigh Denim in New York, in three lengths. Other styles are available at Barneys New York. ($120, www.onia.com, www.raleighworkshop.com, www.barneys.com)
