Ultralight Brigade

More than a century ago, the British luggage maker Globe-Trotter helped revolutionize travel cases with the introduction of paper-based Vulcan fiber while its competitors were still making their luggage in either bridle leather or wood. It has continued to develop new concepts in travel cases with its latest invention, the onehundred&ten (110) carry-on, a product that is both exceptionally durable and light. Created by celebrated industrial designer Ross Lovegrove, the first extremely lightweight hard-shell air cabin bag is made of carbon fiber, the same featherweight material used to fabricate Formula One race cars, combined for the first time with Kevlar®, a strong but lightweight synthetic fiber, for unbreakable strength. The completely handmade onehundred&ten debuted at the 100% Design Tokyo exhibit in 2007, the year of Globe-Trotter’s 110th anniversary, hence the name.  However the $3,525 limited-edition case, available in matte or high-gloss black, is now being sold exclusively through a single U.S. retailer: Moss in Los Angeles and New York.  (866.888.6677, www.mossonline.com)
